Shockwave Therapy

How Can Shockwave Therapy Help You?

DTR Clinic Cardiff offers Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (EWST), also known as shockwave therapy, is a highly effective and clinically proven treatment for certain bone conditions and chronic tendon injuries. An extracorporeal shockwave passes into the body through a hand-held probe. It is a non-electrical and non-evasive high energy pulse. The shockwaves cause an increase in blood flow and inflammation to the target area. It can also help eliminate scar tissue, which significantly goes up with time, more so with chronic conditions. This aids in promoting tissue healing and stimulating cell regeneration, resulting in reduced pain and better function. Shockwave is best used together with a thorough rehabilitation procedure that starts immediately the shockwave therapy is finished.

The Process of Shockwave Therapy

Talk to us and help us trace where you are hurt. The gel is then applied to the area to let the shockwave get delivered in an effective manner. A special probe is then pressed on the affected area allowing the shockwaves to be delivered through the skin. The impulses are administered through your skin as the shockwave spreads inside the hurt tissue as an aspherical ‘radial’ wave. These radial shockwaves then start an inflammation like result in the injured tissue being treated. This will then cause the body to react naturally by increasing the amount of essential blood vessels and blood circulation— this initiates metabolism in the affected tissue.

You feel the shockwaves as pulses that are very uncomfortable but not painful. Generally, your first treatment will begin in a low level intensity and then go up to levels where you start feeling comfortable. These types of treatment are often offered after a week. In fact, we recommend about three to five treatments followed by a 2-3 month period of increased strengthening.

Shockwave Therapy Session Duration

Generally, the shockwave treatment itself lasts exactly 10-15 minutes. However, you will be with us for a period of up to 30 minutes to let other physiotherapy interventions be taken. They may include exercise rehabilitation and soft tissue work.

Effects of Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy has many positive effects on your body. Some of these effects are medical ones, while others are meant to improve your physical condition.

• High metabolism: Shockwaves affect the tissue on a cellular level. The chemical environment of the cells gets affected by free radicals stimulating the release of inflammatory and pain inhibiting substances.

• Pain reduction: The patient experiences reduction in pain, which is explained by the Gate Control theory. The intensive pulses from the transmitter into the tissue causing a strong nociceptor activation of the A-B fibres that affect interneurons that stop the transmission of the pain signals.

• Revascularization: Shockwaves repeatedly applied to the affected area causing a revascularization effect. This is with the new blood flow in stimulating tissue healing and regeneration.

• Reduced Muscle Tone: The “vicious circle” plus the strong pathological relationship between muscle tone and pain will be broken, leading to the restoration of a normalized muscular tone. This effect is important, especially for athletes who participate in sports that demand high physical standards.
